Lake RuataniwhaPosted by jamesy (christchurch, New Zealand) on 5 September 2008 in Landscape & Rural. This is a man made lake in the middle of the South Island of NZ It is part of a large hydro scheme. In the Summer it is used by many recreational boaties and fisherman. It is also used as one of our two premier rowing venues. In the summer it is very hot and in the winter it can be very cold. The closest town is Twizel. I really enjoy taking photos and would appreciate your feedback so that I can learn as I go. I particularly enjoy photographing birds animals and landscapes

dj.tigersprout from San Bruno, CA, United Statesjust gorgeous! reminds me quite a lot of Alaska -- must just be wonderful! great light here -- looks like a divine day to be near the water. and what a background! 5 Sep 2008 5:25am @dj.tigersprout: Thanks DJ nice to hear from you again. It was a beautiful day. This photo has always reminded me of canada i think its the type of trees in the background @Zygene: Merci Zygene Kylie Greenan from AustraliaThis is an amazing image Deb, what really struck me is the range of "blues" in the image, so pretty, but also that it appears there are two climates happeing in this image, in the background on the mountains it looks like snow and in the foreground the people are in their bikini's in what looks like tropical water, the irony is really magnificent! Well captured. 5 Sep 2008 6:16am @Kylie Greenan: This is an amazing place kylie its very hot in the summer around 30C this day. Its a popular boating place The mountains in the background are the southern alps and the snow you can see is there all year around. Thanks for your lovely comments One from Açores, PortugalExcellent choice of layout, very good shot, perfect definition of the image. I really like the presence of snow and the vessel. 5 Sep 2008 6:18am @One: Thankyou very much I was pretty happy with this photo Maxine from Rangiora, New ZealandVery nice D, I have never been in to lake Ruataniwha, might have to do some time! 5 Sep 2008 6:30am @Maxine: Thanks Max it is well worth a visit pretty cold in the winter though @Vink: Thanks Vink Linerberry from Sumner, Christchurch, New ZealandBeautiful image J and great use of thirds. The blues are just crisp and clear and I love the splashes of snow on the mountains:-) 5 Sep 2008 7:14am @Linerberry: Thanks C the thirds are good luck not good management Anthony Lambert from Bielefeld, GermanyFantastic scenery and so crisp and clear.Altogether brilliant. 5 Sep 2008 8:06am @Anthony Lambert: Thanks Anthony LeenaM from Joensuu, FinlandYou are not very skilful only with birds but also landscapes as well and everything else too, I guess :) 5 Sep 2008 9:55am @LeenaM: Thanks for your kind comments Leena I am on my way to work but when I have time will look up the blog site You have a great weekend too Jean-Michel from Brussels, BelgiumHi Jamesy, Very nice picture and olace ! I would like to be there, at the moment ;-) 5 Sep 2008 10:09am @Jean-Michel: Thanks JM its only a short distance from Brussels to NZ isn't it lol GJC from Kyoto, JapanLovely shot with great colors. I wonder if an additional image (rather than a replacement of this) might crop it somewhat differently. Right now the thing is fairly stable with the middle ground (trees and mountains) dividing the photo nearly perfectly in half. How about a little lower or a little higher in the frame? It might also make for an interesting shot. Just a thought. 5 Sep 2008 11:44am @GJC: Thanks I will look into this I like it that other people on this site are comfortable enough to share their ideas and thoughts so thanks again Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomWhat a magnificent scene, beautiful colors and depth. Absolutely delightful. Do you have any shots of the local town..? 5 Sep 2008 11:46am @Observing: The local town is not very exciting It was built solely to provide housing for the workers on the hydroelectric scheme in the area which was built in the 70 and 80's. Twenty years ago a three bedroom house cost about $11000 dollars now the same house is about 325000, would have been a good investment. All the houses were built exactly the same and built on the same angle. It is only recently that Twizel has started to go ahead as a tourist town in its own right. If I find some photos I will put them on Fliss from Melbourne Beach, United StatesOhhhhh... love to be there... love the photo too... never got the chance to go to NZ - only been to Auckland but would love to go to Milford Sound there and the 5 day hike that you can do... pipe dream there... hahaha 5 Sep 2008 12:30pm @Fliss: Thanks Fliss all south Islanders would say the south island is more beautiful than the north island but you have got time yet to get here. Milford sound is very beautiful Lorraine from CanadaIt's stunning Debbie, it's nice to see man-made lake as opposed to the usual destruction, and this is marvelous :) 5 Sep 2008 1:21pm @Lorraine: Thanks Lorraine they did a beautiful job of this area. Well at least we can say that now it probably didn't look so good at the time valenttin from Romanianice blue and green composition. wonderful sky. 5 Sep 2008 3:10pm @valenttin: Thanks Valenttin leslie from norwich, United KingdomStunning shot - can imagine this in a travel magazine 5 Sep 2008 3:24pm @leslie: Kind comments indeed thanks Leslie Jeff from Pembroke Dock, United KingdomYouve done it again, when i look at your shots i just want to relax and reach for a beer(i'll be an alki at this rate) 5 Sep 2008 3:43pm @Jeff: To save you from total alcoholism tomorrows picture will not make you want to open a can of beer. Hope you are enjoying Am3 @Cia: Thanks Cia Graham Russon from Cape Town, South AfricaWhat an incredible shot, of all your landscapes this is my favorite. The colour of the water is awesome. Including the small craft in the foreground is brilliant and makes a great scene, incredible. Nice one. 5 Sep 2008 7:53pm @Graham Russon: Thanks Graham for your very kind words alex centrella from California, United Statesthis would make a great stock shot for that area, if i were you i would hit up the local chamber of commerce to sell this image. 5 Sep 2008 8:39pm @alex centrella: thanks Alex for your kind words. I did have to laugh because Twizel has a population of about 300 -400 people in the winter and just over a 1000 in the summer. I don't think I could ever sell my photos I don't think they are good enough Peter from Antwerp, BelgiumBeautiful landscape shot. Makes you really want to be there indeed! 6 Sep 2008 3:36pm |
